Chapter 1815

The next day, the homeroom teacher called in a parent again. This time, it was James who showed up.

The teacher spoke with genuine concern, "Mr. James, it seems Sophie didn't finish her homework yesterday. |

understand she's staying with you now, right?"

James glanced over at Sophie, who looked completely uninterested, her gaze lost out the window.

"Yes," he replied.

"Mr. James, | know we're in the 21st century and all, and we're a bit more open- minded these days, but Sophie is

still underage. Her main focus should be on her studies, not on a romantic relationship, so..."

The teacher hesitated, feeling a bit awkward about the topic. It's not every day you hear about a high school

junior with a fiancé, let alone living with one. Who knows what folks might say?

"I'll make sure she gets her homework done. Thanks for looking out for her," James replied.

He turned to Sophie and said, "Grab your backpack. We're heading home."

James's tone was so firm that the teacher quickly interjected, "Mr. James, our school doesn't tolerate any form of

domestic violence. She just missed an assignment. As long as she gets it done, there's no need for anything

extreme."

"When did | ever say | was going to use violence?" James retorted, causing the teacher to awkwardly clear their

throat.

"You just look so stern; the teacher's worried you might blow a gasket," Sophie chimed in with a cheeky grin.

James gave her a look, and she quickly feigned innocence, staring down at her shoes.

In the car, James said, "I've given you a quiet place to study, and still you skip your homework. Do | have to sit

next to you for you to actually do it?"

"Not really. Even if you sit there, | still wouldn't do it," Sophie quipped. "The amount of homework they pile on us

is insane. It kills any chance for creative thinking. What's the point of all this cramming? By the tI hit coffege,

I'll have forgotten it all. I'd rather spend my ton things that matter."

"And what's meaningful to you?" James asked.

"Doing what Love," Sophie replied. "I love painting and playing the piano. They might just be hobbies now, but

one day, | might be able to make a living out of them. It's better than slogging through homework You can't

seriously expectto make a career out of doing homework, can you?"

"You're the only one who makes sense, huh?" James said with a frown. "School has rules, Sophie. You can't just

ignore them like that."

"Didn't you say being your fiancée meant | could do what | want?" Sophie pouted. "If you can't even handle the

school, being your fiancée doesn't seem like a big deal."

James felt a bit exasperated. Sophie's quick wit was something he'd never been able to tame.

"Alright, tonight I'll help you with your homework. Once you're done, you can paint or play the piano, and won't

complain. But if you don't finish it, don't expect to catch any Zs."

"If I finish my homework, I'll be too wiped out to paint or play the piano," Sophie said, shaking her head.

James looked at her thoughtfully for a while before asking, "Besides painting and playing the piano, is there

anything else you want to do but haven't gotten around to?"
