Chapter 1643:
“If I leave, Damian will be all alone again,” Nina said seriously. “What if his dad comes back and hurts him
again?”
“Don’t worry. I'll make sure he’s safe,” Kristian promised with quiet assurance.
Nina bit her lip, hesitant. “But...”
Jesse and Kristian both turned their full attention to her.
Nina took a breath, then said, “Damian’s too quiet. If | don’t play with him, he probably won't speak all day.”
“You want to stay in Jeucwell?” Jesse asked, reading between the lines.
Nina’s eyes lit up slightly, and she asked in a hopeful voice, “Can 1?”
Jesse walked over, tapped her watch screen, and brought up Freya's contact. “You can ask Mom yourself.”
Nina pouted, visibly annoyed. He was always like this. She had hoped to win his support first before talking to

The dial tone rang immediately.
Nina hung up right away and shot Jesse a glare.
“I'm just a kid too. | can’t make a decision that big about you staying in Jeucwell,” Jesse said calmly. “Mr. Shaw
can’t decide either. You have to ask Mom and Dad.”
“They won't agree,” Nina muttered, already discouraged.
Her parents were usually kind, but her gut told her this wasn’t something they'd approve.
“Even so, you still have to ask yourself,” Jesse reasoned. “If you want to stay, trying is better than doing nothing
at all.”
Kristian gave Jesse a curious look. How could a child so young sound so wise?
Just then, Nina's smartwatch buzzed.

Freya was calling back after noticing the missed call.
Nina stared at the screen, nerves rising at the word “Mom” flashing before her eyes.
“You're going to have to face it eventually,” Jesse said matter-of-factly. “Pick up.”
Nina glanced his way, then hesitantly tapped to answer.
Freya's warm voice cthrough at once. “Hi, sweetheart.”
“Mom...” Nina's voice was low and unsteady.
Freya sat up straighter, worry creeping into her expression. “What's wrong, baby?”
“Can | ask you something?” Nina said, guilt tugging at her as she bit her finger and shifted her gaze.
Freya exhaled softly, her tone gentle. “Of course. What is it?”
“I want to stay in Jeucwell and go to school here,” Nina's voice faded near the end, barely audible. “Is that
alright?”
Freya blinked, thinking she must have misheard.
She put the phone on speaker, set it down in front of Ellis, and asked again. “What did you just say?”
“There's a really lonely boy here. He's smart and kind,” Nina began, trying to build her case, unaware her dad
was listening. “I want to stay here and go to school with him.”
Freya glanced at Ellis and gave a subtle cue.
