Chapter 457
The rawas playing but | had yet to burst into conversation. | was keeping myself occupied by staring out the
window. He had yet to strike up a conversation either and | hate to say it, but | could feel stension between
us, and it wasn’t sexual.
A sigh fell from my lips as | ran a hand down my face. | didn’t know what to say. He wanted to drivethree
hours away and | was fine with that but not to sit in silence for 3 hours.
“You're killinghere Jake. What's wrong?”.
“I'm thinking babe. Just because I'm not talking doesn’t mean there's anything wrong”.
“So, I'm just imagining the tension between us?”.
“No”. He shook his head. “It’s definitely there but it's not coming from me”.
| frowned. What did he mean? | wasn’t causing tension. Was 1?
“How so?”. | asked. “And if | can feel it then it's coming from you as well. Not justJake”.
“Watch your tone”.
“You've been weird ever since | told you | was going back with my dad”.
“I'm fine”. He shrugged. “You want to go to your dads, and | can’t stop you”.
That was the end of the conversation because | turned my head back around and kept my focus on the views we
were passing. Even though it was dark and | couldn’t see anything.
But at this point I'd rather that than talk to him or with the way the conversation was going argue with him.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWe didn’t utter a word to each other for the next hour. When he pulled into the gas station | unbuckled my seat
belt, a sigh of relief falling from my lips. This was torture and | had to get out of the truck.
| had no idea how to fix whatever it was but this between us right now, | didn’t like it.
“You stay put”. He spoke. “It’s dark and we're in the middle of nowhere”.
“I need to pee”. | made a face.
“Then you wait for me”. He frowned.
“Really?”. | rolled my eyes.
“Yes, fucking really”.
| didn’t like his tone andbeing| got out the car slamming the door shut being me. This remindedof
when we first met. When he thought he could control and tellwhat to do.
Clearly it didn’t stick.
Shoving my hands into my jacket pockets | walked my way into the gas station and made a beeline for the
bathroom. | wasn’t a fan of the restrooms in gas stations but a girls got to pee.
“You need a key Miss”.
That would explain why the door was locked. | glanced at the clerk, an older man, greyish hair that was thinning
on top and a beer belly that his jeans couldn't hide.
“And you need to purchase something before you can use it”.
“Of course you do”. | sighed.
At this rate he was going to need a mop and a wet floor sign.
“You ain't from round here, are you?”.
“A few hours that way”. | nodded towards the highway as | scanned the section for snacks. What the hell was
Jake doing?
“Young girl like you shouldn't be out here all alone”.
And there it was. A creepy line that sounded like it was right out of a movie. Was he trying to scare me?
“Good job she’s not alone then isn’t it”. He slammed money onto the counter. “50 on 5 and whatever she’s
wanting”.
His voice alone sent shivers down my spine. He wasn’t fucking around and I'm sure the tone of his voice alone
put the fear into the clerk. He was already in a fucked off mood, this has only made him worse.
“Just stating facts. | mean no harm”. The colour drained from his face as he took a step back.
I'm pretty sure Jake’s wolf just made an appearance.
“You're one of them”. He whispered.
Oh, | wasn’t expecting him to say that.
“One of what?”. Jake spoke.
“I've been around for many years. This gas station has been here since the forties. You see things”.
Ah, so he wasn’t admitting to knowing what we were.
“Get what you're getting so we can get out of here and back on the road”. He spoke before walking out the door
and towards the truck.
| got the key from the clerk and went to pee real quick. It was the fastest pee | had ever had in my life. Once |
was finished, | grabbed a few bags of chips, a drink for the both of us and a pack of jelly sweets. That should
keep us going for the rest of the journey.
“That one a leader?”. The clerk asked.
A leader?
| frowned placing my stuff on the counter. “What is it you think we are?”. | asked.
