Chapter 648
Holding onto the cash, Charlie couldn't stop thinking: if he brought this to the gambling den with Zachary by his
side, they could easily multiply it. All he had to do tonight was take one more risk.
Before long, it was past midnight-2 a.m. to be exact-when Charlie crept into the factory. Everyone was asleep by
then, including the guard out front, slumped over in exhaustion.
The workshop was dark and quiet. Spotting the three machines almost
immediately, Charlie felt a wave of relief wash over him. He quickly got to work, removing the last screw and
prying open the outer shell. With a wrench in hand, he began fiddling inside until something felt off.
He paused.
A couple nights ago, he'd gone out of his way to destroy these machines. He'd been shocked when the
technician said they could still be repaired, but he brushed it off. Maybe the guy was just good. Maybe tech was
just that advanced
now.
But now he realized-these machines had never been broken.
They hadn't been repaired. They were never damaged in the first place.

Panicked, Charlie scrambled to reverse everything. He shoved the casing back on, reattached the screws, made
it look untouched, and bolted out of the factory.
The next morning, as soon as he stepped onto factory grounds, Mr. Lambert flagged him down.
"Charlie, got a minute?"
"l, uh, I've got something urgent. Can we talk later?" Charlie blurted, already turning to leave.
But Mr. Lambert grabbed his arm. "Don't run. Miss Sanders has something important to discuss with you."
Charlie's heart sank, but he had no choice. He followed Mr. Lambert into Sarah's office, trying to calm his nerves.
The door shut behind them with a quiet click.
He sat down awkwardly, eyes flicking between Sarah and Mr. Lambert. *Did they find out what happened last
night?*
"You know why | called you in?" Sarah asked coldly.
Charlie shook his head, feigning innocence. "No idea. I'm completely in the dark."
"Still playing dumb? You're really not going to admit anything until we drag the cops in here?" Mr. Lambert
snapped, raising his voice.
Charlie flinched, panic rising in his chest. "Miss Sanders, Mr. Lambert, | really don't know what you're talking
about, | swear-"

At Sarah's nod, he pulled out his phone and pressed play on a video.
At first, the screen was pitch black.

The figure grew closer.
Clearer.
Until the face lit up in night vision-Charlie's face. Plain as day.
Charlie's breath caught in his throat. He fought the urge to snatch the phone and hurl it across the room.
He didn't speak. And Sarah didn't need him to.
