Chapter 663

"I'll see what food we have in the kitchen. You stay here and don't move around," Zachary said gently. He raised

his hand to ruffle Sarah's hair, but she ducked away. He left with a disappointed look.

Sarah watched his retreating figure and muttered under her breath, "Is he treatinglike a child?"

The countryside rooms had poor sound insulation, and soon she heard clattering noises from the kitchen.

Curious about what Zachary was doing, Sarah pressed her lips together and carefully eased herself off the bed,

supporting herself against the wall.

Just as she was about to hop a few steps, she lost her balance on one foot. Sarah let out a sharp cry as she

tumbled to the floor.

The pain from her ankle made her face turn pale, and her slender body curled up into a small ball.

Hearing the commotion, Zachary rushed over. Seeing the scene before him, his pupils contracted in alarm. He

hurried to her side and carefully lifted her back onto the bed.

The doctors in West Ridge didn't make house calls, and Zachary didn't dare move Sarah when she was in such

discomfort.

After a long while, Sarah's furrowed brow finally relaxed, and she slowly opened her eyes.

Zachary sighed in relief, but his expression quickly darkened. "Didn't | tell you not to move around? Why are you

so stubborn?"

Sarah opened her mouth and managed to say one word in a slightly hoarse voice, "Water."

Her throat was painfully dry, making it difficult to speak.

Zachary set aside his scolding and rushed to get her a cup of water. He returned, supporting her back with one

hand while holding the cup with the other, gently helping her drink.

After finishing the water, Sarah took a moment to recover. Aware that she was in the wrong, she lowered her

head and said quietly, "I just wanted to see if | could help with anything."

Hearing this, Zachary tapped her forehead with resigned affection before leaving the room again.

When he returned, he was carrying a steaming bowl of boiled noodles.

Noticing Sarah's questioning look, Zachary sat on the edge of the bed, blew on the noodles, and explained

without looking up, "Your foot is still injured, so you shouldn't eat anything spicy. | made snoodles-it's

simple, but it'll fill your stomach."

With that, he picked up snoodles and held them to Sarah's lips.

Sarah cautiously opened her mouth and swallowed, tasting the flavor.

As she chewed, she secretly wondered when Zachary, a wealthy young master,

had learned to cook, or rather, for whom he had learned.

The thought that there might be someone else made Sarah's heart clench painfully, bringing her close to tears.

She couldn't show it openly-at the very least, she couldn't reveal her vulnerable side in front of him.

Sarah ate the noodles in silence, and Zachary didn't try to make conversation either.

After she finished, Zachary helped Sarah lie down. "Get ssleep now."

Seeing Sarah close her eyes, Zachary tucked the blanket around her before taking the dishes away.

Being a night owl by nature, Sarah couldn't fall asleep easily. With her injured ankle forcing her to lie in one

position, it was even harder to drift off.

When Zachary returned after a quick shower, Sarah was still staring at the ceiling with wide-open eyes.

He spoke with a mix of amusement and exasperation, "Why aren't you asleep yet?"

Sarah blinked her slightly sore eyes and shook her head, pushing aside the jumble of thoughts in her mind.

Instead of answering, she asked, "Are you sleeping on the sofa tonight?"

Thinking she was worried he might crawl into bed with her during the night, Zachary pointed to the sofa outside

the room and said, "Yes."

Sarah looked in the direction he was pointing. AChapter 664

The room wasn't very large. Though Zachary had chosen a relatively nice place, the countryside had limited

options-it wasn't possible to conjure up a luxury apartment out of thin air.

The couch in the living area wasn't even half the length of Zachary's height.

If he had to curl up in such a small space to sleep, it would obviously be uncomfortable.

Although Sarah didn't want to be indebted to him, she couldn't find the right words at this moment.

She could hardly say, "The bed is big enough, we can share it."

In the end, she just responded with a simple "Oh" and said nothing more.

In the middle of the night, Sarah suddenly felt a chill creeping into her body.

When she awoke, she realized she had kicked off her comforter.

At that moment, she heard deliberately softened footsteps coming from the other

room.

Was Zachary still awake?

Was he unable to sleep, or was the couch too uncomfortable?

Sarah moved her ankle slightly and found it wasn't as painful anymore. Just as she was thinking about getting up

to check, she looked up and met a pair of tired dark eyes.

"Why are you awake?" Zachary's first words were of concern.

Sarah clutched the corner of her blanket and looked away. "Nothing. | had a nightmare and woke up scared. Why

aren't you asleep yet?"

Zachary held up a plastic bucket. "It's raining outside, and the roof is leaking. | was going to use this to catch the

water."

Sarah hadn't heard the rain, probably because it was falling lightly.

She keenly noticed that Zachary's shoulder was wet in one spot and guessed that the leak might be right above

the couch.

After struggling with herself for a while, she finally convinced herself to scoot over and pat the empty space

beside her. "Why don't you just sleep on the bed?"

Zachary's eyes darkened, and he shook his head in refusal. "No, your foot is injured."

Sarah couldn't bring herself to invite him to the bed a second time, so she offered a compromise. "Then, why

don't you make a sleeping bag on the floor in here?"

This time, Zachary didn't object.

The next day, before dawn, Sarah left.

She still didn't want to get too close to Zachary, even though she had unknowingly becindebted to him in

many ways.

As soon as Sarah limped away, supporting herself with a wooden cane she had taken from the kitchen, Zachary,

who should have been sound asleep, opened his eyes.

There wasn't a trace of drowsiness on his face—he had simply pretended to be asleep to spare her any

awkwardness.

Zachary closed his eyes briefly, suppressing the reluctance and concern in his heart. When he opened them

again, his expression had returned to its usual calmness.

He still needed to follow up on Charlie's situation.

Besides that, he also needed to help her eliminate the remaining threats.
