Chapter 341

Sarah drank the rest of her wine in one gulp, placed the glass back on the table, and said, "I'm

going to rest."

"Alright," Melvin replied, clinking his glass before sitting back down. His gaze lingered on his

phone, his expression complicated.

Sarah returned to her room, tidied up the gifts she'd received, and went to freshen up. By the time

she sat on the edge of her bed, it was already 11:30 p.m.

She held the bracelet Zachary had given her, lost in thought.

Why hadn't he come? What could have held him up?

In just thirty minutes, her birthday would be over. She had received so many heartfelt wishes, but

not his.

While she was deep in thought, her phone chimed with a message. Picking it up, she saw a

multimedia message containing text and a photo.

The photo showed Zachary fast asleep. Her heart skipped a beat. Below the image was a message

from Vivian:

"Miss Sanders, this is Vivian. First, happy birthday! Zachary really wanted to attend your party, but

he couldn't because of me. Please don't blhim!"

Her again. It was because of her.

Sarah clenched her phone tightly, fighting the urge to throw it across the room. Her heart felt like it was being

sliced open as she stared at the photo, unsure how to respond.

Turning off the phone screen, Sarah closed her eyes tightly, a single tear sliding down her cheek. She had

thought it wouldn't hurt this much.

But after seeing Vivian's message and the picture, it felt like her heart was being twisted by a knife-worse than

the pain of their breakup.

Maybe she shouldn't have trusted Zachary again in the first place. It would have spared her this hurt.

She placed the bracelet he had given her back into its box and shoved it into the far corner of her closet. She

didn't want to see anything from him ever again.

Perhaps back in Saint Nock, she should have made a clean break with him.

The next day, Sarah went to work feeling down. She had barely sat at her desk when Zachary showed up.

He placed a gift box on her desk and pushed it toward her. "Sasa, I..."

He hesitated, his memory blurry. He still couldn't piece together everything that had happened the day before.

All he remembered was receiving a call from Vivian saying she'd been in a car accident and was at the hospital.

When he arrived, he'd had a glass of water-and then blacked out.

This morning, when Zachary finally woke up and checked his phone, the events of the previous day hit him. By

then, Sarah's birthday had long passed, and he had missed it entirely.

"Mr. Reynolds, I'm at work. Please leave,” Sarah said coldly, spitting out each word like ice through clenched

teeth.

Zachary's head snapped up. His tired eyes were filled with guilt he couldn't hide. "I can explain what happened

yesterday."

Sarah gave a bitter laugh, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Mr. Reynolds, then

please tellwhere were you yesterday? Were you with Vivian?"

Their eyes locked, but an unfamiliar distance had already settled between them, growing from who

knew when.

Zachary didn't know how to respond. He *had* been with Vivian yesterday, but not by choice.

"Why aren't you answering? Is it because you can't bring yourself to say it, or because | was right?"

Sarah narrowed her eyes, her tone dripping with mockery as she looked at him.

Her thoughts drifted back to the moment after she had fallen into the water-the man who had

risked everything to pull her out.

Could the Zachary standing before her now still risk everything for her?

"Sasa, it's my fault. I'll make it up to you," Zachary said, his voice filled with regret.

But Sarah suddenly interrupted him, her gaze shifting toward the window, distant and melancholic.

"Zachary, tellare you apologizing to the person | was yesterday or the person I am today?"

"What?" Zachary asked, clearly confused.

"It doesn't matter anymore," Sarah said softly, her voice heavy with sadness. "No apology, no grand

gesture, can ever replace a simple birthday wish before midnight."

Her eyes fell to the floor, the light in them fading as she looked at Zachary with quiet sorrow.
