Chapter 889
In that instant, Marguerite's heart felt like it was packed with a dozen little bunnies, thumping and leaping wildly
inside her chest.
Did Maurice just fall out of bed?
His wounds hadn't even healed yet-this couldn't be happening.
"Where are you right now? How is he?" she demanded.
Laura's voice trembled so badly it was barely recognizable. "I'm standing outside the room-I don't dare go in. The
doctor's stitching up Mr. Winston."
"Don't panic. I'll be there right away."
Marguerite ended the call and turned to Chuck. "Taketo the hospital, now."
Hayes immediately clung to Marguerite's hand, his little fingers tightening with worry. "Mommy, are you going to
see that awful Uncle Maurice again? Aren't you afraid Aunt and Uncle will be mad?"
Marguerite squeezed his hand gently. "Something urgent cup. I'll be back before you know it."
She hopped into the front passenger seat, and Chuck sped off, tearing down the street. They reached the
hospital in record time.

Chuck stayed in the car while Marguerite hurried upstairs. By the tshe reached Maurice's room, Laura was
nowhere to be seen.
"| told you not to cback! Don't you understand plain English?"
The man's voice rang out the second he heard the door, sharp and angry even though he hadn't opened his eyes
yet; despite his weakness, the fury was unmistakable.
"You fired Laura?"
Marguerite sat down beside him. Only then did Maurice open his eyes, surprise flickering across his face before
his gaze softened.
"Yes. She wasn't up to my standards."
"If the best nurse in town isn't good enough for you, then nobody is. Should I call her back?"
Maurice's eyes locked on hers, unwavering. "I think you'd do just fine."
"Still trying to get a rise out of me, even when you're hurt? You never hadrunning around after you before,
so you don't really know if I'm any good."
Maurice managed a laugh. "I'd never ask you to wait on me. I'd rather put up with the pain myself than see you
fussing over me."
He'd whispered sweet nothings to her before, but Marguerite had always remained unmoved. If only he'd saved
those lines for Daphne; things wouldn't be so complicated for her now.
"I'll send Janie over to help you."
"She doesn't have the time."
"| already called her before | came. She's on her way."
Maurice stiffened, the smile faltering on his lips, leaving behind a trace of bitterness and hurt.
"Marguerite, must you be so cold?"
"It's not that I'm heartless. | honestly

Her explanation seemed to offer Maurice a sliver of comfort. I'm

Marguerite simply looked at him, silent. Sometimes, saying nothing was the clearest answer.
But Maurice's gaze lingered on her face. "Marguerite, you even need to wear a mask to seenow?"
Marguerite drew a deep breath, unwilling to drag Daphne into this.
"Just a breakout," she said. "Bad skin day."
Maurice's eyes sharpened. "Don't lie to me. Take it off and letsee."
She hesitated.
She could fool Hayes and Manley with ease, but not Maurice.
Left with no choice, she slowly pulled off the mask.
Against her pale skin, the angry red handprint was stark and unmistakable.
Maurice's eyes snapped into focus, his expression turning cold and fierce. "Who hit you?"
Marguerite looked away. "Nobody."
"Was it Daphne?"
