Chapter 294 By the tthe sun sank low, the weight of the scepter still hadn't left me. Even when it vanished from my grip, it remained humming in the marrow of my bones, alive in my veins.
Summoning the scepter hadn't just been a triumph; it had been a shift. I could feel it in my bones, in the way my steps felt heavier but surer, in the faint hum under my skin as though threads of power had stitched themselves intoovernight On my way to the pack house, I cacross Alec. He was coming from the training arena and I almost bumped into him since my mind was miles away.
"You look dangerous today," he says, mouth quirking into a half-smile.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtI tilt my head, smirking back. "Dangerous in a good way, I hope." "Good for us. Bad for anyone who tries to hurt you." His voice dips lower. "But more power usually comes with more risk, Sadie. You know that, right?" I nod, though the truth is... I don't know. Not fully. The scepter had answeredonce; that didn't mean it always would. As much as I hate it, doubt had started lingering in the back of my head. I'm riding the high of summoning the scepter, but there is a part ofthat's afraid I won't be able to do it again.
And then there's him. Alec. The thought of the date I'd agreed to hung somewhere in the back of my mind like an unopened letter I wasn't sure I wanted to read. Why had I said yes? Part ofwanted to believe it was hope - that maybe this could work, maybe he meant everything he'd promised. But another part was still braced for the shatter, for the moment the floor would give way beneath me.
I push the thought aside. Now wasn't the time.
Alec insisted we eat together, and though I wanted to retreat to my room and sort through the storm of my thoughts, I didn't argue. Maybe this will be good for me. It's better than sitting in my room and overthinking everything.
The dining hall is warm with firelight, shadows flickering over the stone walls. Alec takes his seat at the head, of course, his presence impossible to ignore.
Brian is there too, his sharp eyes cutting betweenand Alec like he was trying to solve a riddle. Aspen sat to my left, her small legs swinging beneath her chair, eyes bright with curiosity.
It's Aspen who breaks the silence first. "Mommy, you're stronger?" she asks, her voice a whisper like she was speaking about a secret only we knew.
I freeze for a moment, then smile; I didn't expect her to notice anything.
I brush a strand of her hair behind her ear. "How do you know that, sweetheart?" Her grin is wide, missing-tooth and radiant when she answers. "I feel it... here" she taps her chest.
I stare at her, unable to find the words. Is the fact that my daughter can feel I'm more powerful a good thing? Does it mean that since she can sense it, she's also connected to that spower? Does it mean there is a chance for her to inherit these powers? Across the table, Alec leans forward, elbows on the wood. His gaze pins me, steady and intent. "How did it feel?" I hesitate, searching for words. "Like
coming hto a part of myself I didn't know was missing," I admit softly. "It wasn't easy, but when it happened. Nexhale, remembering that moment of release, the way everything clicked into place. "It felt right."
Alec's jaw tightens slightly, like he's holding something back. He is m genuinely happy for me; I can sense that, but he's also worried. His voice drops lower. "You've stepped into something huge, Sadie. That kind of power... it changes you."
