Chapter 295 "I know," I say quietly.
I don't know how to explain it, but I feel different. Like something insidehas changed. I can't put my finger on it, but it's there, lingering on the edge of my soul.
Feeling eyes on me, I turn only to find Brian's eyes on"You feel different," he says slowly, almost accusingly. "Stronger. Almost like..." He trails off, and I don't miss the tension in his shoulders. "Almost like Xena." Raven steps into the room, a plate of food in her hands. "She's nothing like Xena," she says quickly, a protective fire in her voice.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtNyx's voice stirs in my mind, calm but certain. "That's because of the scepter. Connecting with it amplifies your power." Brian raises his hands in a gesture of surrender, but his eyes never leave me. "I'm not saying she is. I'm saying Xena will feel it. If I can, she definitely can." I keep my expression neutral, fingers brushing absently against the table.
"Then let her know," I say finally, surprising even myself with the steel in my voice.
I will try my best to bridge the gap between Nyx and Xena, but I'll also be prepared to end Xena if that's what it takes. I won't let her hurt Nyx again, or the people I love.
He doesn't look convinced, but even then, the way Brian looks athas changed. Not fear, exactly, but recognition or maybe admiration.
"I'm glad you're getting stronger." Alec clears his throat, his eyes softer now, his voice low enough to make the words feel personal. “But strength draws attention. The wrong kind. You're going to be a bigger target now." "Have you forgotten that not a lot of people can takeon?” I ask.
I know for sure Alphas can't takeQu on. Alec is among the strongest Alphas and I was able to take him down. The only ones who I think would be a threat are Xena and Kaden, but they don't matter because they were always a threat toand Nyx.
I stare at Alec when he remains quiet. Something in my chest tightens. The way he is looking at me, like I am something he wants to protect, makes my pulse stumble.
There is a moment where neither of us looks away. His gaze drops to my mouth, just briefly, and heat curls in my stomach. I break the moment, turning away under the weight of my own need and desire.
"You know." Raven pulls my attention. "I've never met Xena, but your aura now feels strangely familiar." I frown. "What do you mean?" She sits back. "I'm not sure how to explain it, but your aura just feels familiar. Like I've cacross someone with a similar one."
Everyone remains silent after she says that. It doesn't make sense. The only one m a ne who might have a similar aura is Xena and I'm double sure Raven has never met Xena.... So how could she have sensed someone else with my aura?
Aspen giggles suddenly, breaking the heaviness. "Mommy's a superhero now" She puffs out her little chest, proud. "And superheroes always win." The tension eases, laughter softening the edges of the moment. Even Brian cracks a reluctant smile.
Later, when the plates were cleared and everyone had drifted away, I lingered alone by the fire. I flexed my fingers, remembering the weight of the scepter in my hand. Gold and white, pulsing with a light that felt like it belonged to me. For the first tin a long time, I allowed myself to hope. Still, a part ofcouldn't shake Brian's words.
Xena will feel it.
He's probably right. Somewhere out there, Xena would know. And she'll strike.
