Chapter 523

Sydney's eyes flicked back to the diamond brooch with a mixture of greed and resentment. She sighed, her voice

soft and pitiful. "Melvin treats you so well. | wish | had a big brother like him."

Sarah gave her a sweet, almost innocent smile. "Well... you might as well keep dreaming. Your mom can't just

pop out a brother for you. Unless... maybe your dad...” She paused tically, then widened her eyes as if

she'd just said something scandalous. "Kidding! Just joking!"

Sydney's temples throbbed with anger.

How dare she say that about my father?

Sarah had never talked like this before. But that was fine. Sydney told herself that Sarah would get what was

coming to her soon enough.

While Sydney was still fuming, Sarah ducked into the fitting room to check the gown she was wearing.

The stitching along the waistline had been tampered with.

It looked fine now, but in about thirty minutes, the seam would burst wide open- humiliating her in front of

everyone.

Sarah's eyes darkened.

She swapped the gown for a similar one and glanced toward the dress Sydney had been eyeing earlier.

The couture dress.

Sarah smiled.

The one who tries to set the trap... often ends up in it.

She walked back into the room and caught Sydney staring longingly at the dress.

"Do you want to wear it?" Sarah asked casually, her tone light.

Sydney's eyes lit up. "Can I?"

Sarah tossed her the dress. "Of course."

Sydney hurried to change, barely containing her excitement. Once she saw herself in the mirror, her face glowed

with satisfaction.

This dress was far more elegant than the one she'd cin. And once they arrived at Grandor Theatre, she was

sure she'd outshine Sarah completely.

Grandor Theatre was the largest opera house in East Coast.

Mr. Ferguson was a legend in the opera world; every one of his performances sold out.

Just securing a private box took significant effort and connections.

As soon as Sarah stepped into their reserved box, she immediately understood why Sydney had gone to all this

trouble.

They weren't alone.

A third person was already inside.

Benjamin White.

Sarah recognized him instantly.

The only male heir of the White family. The man she had met that day at the Sanders estate.

And now here he was.

Waiting for her. "Miss Sanders, what a pleasure to see you again."

Benjamin stood and extended his hand toward her.

Sarah gave him a fleeting, disinterested glance. "Mr. White," she said coolly, "if I'd known you'd be here..." She

trailed off, turning back toward the stage with a look of genuine appreciation for the performance below.

Mr. Ferguson's operas were legendary, and she had genuinely wanted to enjoy the show. But the two people

sharing the box with her seemed intent on ruining the experience.

"Benji, try this!" Sydney giggled as she placed a delicate pastry on a small plate in front of him. She threw Sarah

a saccharine smile. "Sarah, have stoo!"

Sarah ignored her and kept watching the stage.

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Benjamin's face darken in irritation. But she didn't care.

What caught her attention more was the way he kept eyeing her-lecherous and unashamed.

Sydney's expression soured. She'd gone through all this trouble, orchestrating this ridiculous setup, and Sarah

didn't even bother to pretend to play along.

She forced another bright smile and got up, practically skipping over to sit beside Sarah.

"Sarah, why aren't you chatting with Benji? He's such good company."

Sarah's lips curved into a faint, cold

Sarah let out a sharp laugh. "Ah."

The single syllable dripped with disdain.

Sydney's eyes lit up with amusement.

Sarah tilted her head, eyes glinting. "Maybe you should worry about yourself instead of me."

Sydney froze. "What's that supposed to mean?"

A chill ran down her spine.

Something was wrong.

Her shoulders suddenly felt cool.

She glanced down-and saw it.

The seams on her dress-the custom couture dress she'd been so thrilled to wear

—had split wide open across the back.

Her shoulders were exposed. Worse, the fragile stitching along the back had completely unraveled, leaving much

of her back exposed.
